Diwali is not just a festival of lights; it is a beautiful five-day journey that symbolises prosperity, gratitude, relationships, renewal and the victory of good over evil. Each day carries a deeper message that we can also apply to our inner lives.
1. Dhanteras β Welcoming Prosperity
The first day celebrates wealth, health and well-being. Traditionally, people buy gold, silver or utensils and worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari.
Inner message: True wealth is not merely what we possess, but the health, happiness, peace and gratitude we cultivate.
2.Naraka Chaturdashi β Releasing Negativity
Also known as Choti Diwali, this day celebrates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
Inner message: Let go of negative thoughts, limiting beliefs, resentment and emotional baggage. Make space for a lighter, more peaceful self
3 Lakshmi Puja β Inviting Light and Abundance
The main day of Diwali celebrates Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and his victory over Ravana. Homes are illuminated, and Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped.
Inner message: Invite abundance into your life through clarity, kindness, wisdom, generosity and a grateful heart. Let your inner light guide your actions.
4 Govardhan Puja β Gratitude and Protection
This day commemorates Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Vrindavan. It also celebrates nature’s abundance through Annakut offerings.
Inner message: Recognise the protection and support we receive from nature, relationships and the universe. Practise humility and gratitude
5. Bhai Dooj β Celebrating Relationships
The final day celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, symbolising love, care, blessings and family connections.
Inner message: Cherish relationships, express love, nurture meaningful connections and remember that belonging and emotional support are precious forms of wealth.
The Deeper Message of Diwali
If we look beyond the rituals, these five days offer us a beautiful roadmap for living:
* Dhanteras: Value what you have.
* Naraka Chaturdashi: Release what weighs you down.
* Diwali: Illuminate what lies within.
* Govardhan Puja: Be grateful for what supports you.
* Bhai Dooj: Honour the relationships that enrich your life.
Perhaps the greatest Diwali celebration is not about how many lamps we light outside, but how much darkness we are willing to transform within ourselves.
Let this Diwali be more than a celebration. Let it be an inward journey towards gratitude, healing, abundance, love and self-awareness.
Because ultimately, the light we seek is already within us. We only need to allow it to shine.
Wishing everyone a very Happy Diwali! πͺ
