There is a difference between helping someone and trying to fix them.
Sometimes, when someone we love is struggling, our instinct is to give advice, find solutions, tell them what they should do, or even try to take away their pain.
We do it because we care.
But sometimes, what a person needs most is not a solution. They need space to be seen, heard and accepted exactly where they are.
This is what it means to hold space.
Holding space is walking alongside someone on their journey without judging them, making them feel inadequate, or trying to control where their journey takes them.
It is saying:
“I am here. You don’t have to go through this alone. And I trust that you will find your way.”
Holding space requires us to become comfortable with not having all the answers.
It asks us to listen without immediately responding. To witness someone’s pain without taking it away. To allow their emotions without telling them how they should feel. And perhaps most importantly, it asks us to respect that their journey belongs to them.
As healers, therapists, parents, friends and partners, we can sometimes confuse love with responsibility.
We think, “If I love you, I must save you.”
But we cannot live another person’s life for them.
We cannot heal their wounds for them.
We cannot make their choices for them.
We can offer compassion.
We can offer presence.
We can offer perspective.
We can offer a safe space.
But ultimately, their healing is their journey.
Holding space is not indifference.
It is actually a very deep form of love. It says:
“I don’t need to control your outcome to care about you.”
And perhaps that is one of the hardest lessons in relationships learning to love someone without taking ownership of their journey.
Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply sit beside another human being in their uncertainty and say:
“You don’t have to have it all figured out today. Take your time. I am here.”
Because healing doesn’t always need someone to lead the way.
Sometimes, it simply needs someone willing to walk beside us.
